Hiring in Software

Joining one of the region's largest software teams with sites in Norwich and Great Yarmouth. We're currently looking for three full-stack developers to join the team.

What’s a typical day look like?

A typical day within this role will involve being a resource for both our development teams, with the expectation that ideas and best practices will be contributed and implemented across all AST solutions.

This may involve being split across multiple projects depending on the department's workload. There will be an element of mentoring involved, as AST has a strong history of developing talent including those undertaking software development apprenticeships. It's also crucial to be comfortable collaborating with senior and established staff on new and existing technologies that you may have more experience with, to ensure that the team continues to expand their knowledge.

The person in this role will be expected to take part in daily stand-up meetings which are hosted by the relevant project managers, who you'll report to and work closely with. Weekly development meetings are held and hosted by the department's tech leads, and serve to keep staff updated on all work and new technology being undertaken or used within the team.

What’s the Department Structure?

The GSS department currently houses over 20 people, with the department being split into two teams that focus on their own projects and workloads and are managed by a project manager. There’s some overlap between these projects, and the teams will become merged in the future.

The person who takes this role will be expected to work between the teams depending on projects or tasks at the time. They may have to be involved in more than one project at a time. Each team contains employees who are experts in frontend, backend and middleware development. However, a key component of this role will be to drive innovation and best practise, assisting other members of the team to become proficient in these areas, depending on what is required at the time.

What’s the team dynamics like?

The team are very friendly and outgoing, with a mix of those who are at the relative start of their professional journey as well as those who have 20+ years within the software development industry. As a department they’re split between two office locations - Great Yarmouth (our head office) and Bawburgh. The majority of staff choose to work in the office full time, sometimes employing a hybrid pattern between the two offices. There are also staff based prominently at home, some on the south coast of England, so the ability to collaborate effectively with those not in the office is key.
